Town Hall Discussions

I've been inspired to create a series of events where you can have discussions with your fellow peers and people you may have not met at SMC...yet. This is from seeing Aïcha Conde, our A.S. Director of Community Relations, holding town hall discussions from raising awareness and need for a gender equity center to discussing bullying and its effects and so on. I want to hold discussions on the following:

  • Discussing educational goals and how to attain them by utilizing effective resources within SMC and outside of campus
    • Thursday May 5 from 2:50 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Location: Clocktower

This event hopes to share discussions about what we want to do and get to know each other's efforts in what we're doing to get there. We all have educational goals and its important to know that you have a community that can support you and let you know of resources you can and should be using to get there. Maybe as an undocumented student you may know of available resources others should know about, or as someone who has been working full-time may know how important and effective time management may work from your experience. It's students coming together to help each other out and help you feel at home within SMC with students you may have never known and hopefully this event helps.

  • Being introduced to, building, and maintaining a great social environment
    • Thursday May 12 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m Location: Clocktower

This event hopes now to let everyone know about clubs, organizations, and groups of incredible people that may help you feel at home either on campus or off campus. Do you feel you want to get out of your shell and events' games and icebreakers aren't your thing, or you feel you want to get to build closer friendships to then take a "risk" and break out of your shell? This will be an event for everyone to just know what kind of activities, ideas, and friendships are out in SMC and outside of campus which may help you or you may help others if you want to know who's interested in creating events, volunteering, or getting a job. It all starts with that hello and knowing another person may want to get to know you as much as you want to get to know them.

  • Financial preparation and support: What is available for me to pay for school and find scholarships?
    • Thursday May 19 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Location: Clocktower

This event hopes to bring together a community of students who either work full-time and want to know what is available out there to help finance school, or give each other advice on how to pick up a job, build a resume, or prepare for that next scholarship application. We hope to bring together as many resources and centers on campus to this event to discuss what is available for you, as well hearing what are the challenges we all face. It's a critical issue that affects many in terms of how to be financially stable and for many how to afford that next month. This hopes to only culminate the series of events in allowing our community to share their voices, experiences, and reality and build a tighter and friendlier community. Once again it is all to bring a community together.
