ICC Social Volunteering Event

From Orlando, ICC Vice Chair, "I need some volunteers for the ICC Social event. The event is happening on May 19th at 4:00 PM at the Cayton center. I would like to volunteers to show up at 12:00 PM so we can start decorating. What they would do is very simple: They would cover the walls with decorations and set up tables and chairs, maybe clean up a little. The event runs from 4-7 pm, so we need clean up afterwards."

There are two shifts of Volunteers:

  • From 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
  • From 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. This will be the Clean up session. This is incredibly important, cannot emphasize how important it is that we get volunteers for clean up

Important: If you sign up then you MUST show up. There are no excuses when it comes time to signing up and bailing last minute, so please be professional and understand that if you sign up then you are firm about showing up. Should you not be able to show up, you have a 48 hour period before the event to email Edgar that you cannot come.

Town Hall Discussions
May
19
2:30 PM14:30

Town Hall Discussions

I've been inspired to create a series of events where you can have discussions with your fellow peers and people you may have not met at SMC...yet. This is from seeing Aïcha Conde, our A.S. Director of Community Relations, holding town hall discussions from raising awareness and need for a gender equity center to discussing bullying and its effects and so on. I want to hold discussions on the following:

  • Discussing educational goals and how to attain them by utilizing effective resources within SMC and outside of campus
    • Thursday May 5 from 2:50 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Location: Clocktower

This event hopes to share discussions about what we want to do and get to know each other's efforts in what we're doing to get there. We all have educational goals and its important to know that you have a community that can support you and let you know of resources you can and should be using to get there. Maybe as an undocumented student you may know of available resources others should know about, or as someone who has been working full-time may know how important and effective time management may work from your experience. It's students coming together to help each other out and help you feel at home within SMC with students you may have never known and hopefully this event helps.

  • Being introduced to, building, and maintaining a great social environment
    • Thursday May 12 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m Location: Clocktower

This event hopes now to let everyone know about clubs, organizations, and groups of incredible people that may help you feel at home either on campus or off campus. Do you feel you want to get out of your shell and events' games and icebreakers aren't your thing, or you feel you want to get to build closer friendships to then take a "risk" and break out of your shell? This will be an event for everyone to just know what kind of activities, ideas, and friendships are out in SMC and outside of campus which may help you or you may help others if you want to know who's interested in creating events, volunteering, or getting a job. It all starts with that hello and knowing another person may want to get to know you as much as you want to get to know them.

  • Financial preparation and support: What is available for me to pay for school and find scholarships?
    • Thursday May 19 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Location: Clocktower

This event hopes to bring together a community of students who either work full-time and want to know what is available out there to help finance school, or give each other advice on how to pick up a job, build a resume, or prepare for that next scholarship application. We hope to bring together as many resources and centers on campus to this event to discuss what is available for you, as well hearing what are the challenges we all face. It's a critical issue that affects many in terms of how to be financially stable and for many how to afford that next month. This hopes to only culminate the series of events in allowing our community to share their voices, experiences, and reality and build a tighter and friendlier community. Once again it is all to bring a community together.

Kappan Konnection Orientation/Workshop
May

3:00 PM15:00

Kappan Konnection Orientation/Workshop

It's time to introduce what has been laying flat on our website which is Kappan Konnection aka our PTK Alumni Program. There is a future being created on this website and that will stem out towards creating a platform where students can interact directly with transfer students who agree (for that semester or term) to be an Alumni Ambassador.

An Alumni Ambassador will be one who will have a profile on the website with a small bio, what clubs/organizations they were involved within Santa Monica College, resources they used, and so much more. Also, the site will offer specific tabs for clicking universities, which will find alumni ambassadors, specific transfer university scholarships/resources, and much more information. It will hope to strip away unnecessary information from school's website and find exactly who and what you look for, as well have direct contact with an ambassador from that school who transferred directly from SMC.

There will be a lot more information, but it will not necessarily be all a presentation as the offer is that if you join and complete the tasks required (this will be mentioned during the orientation/workshop, then you will get 3 event credits.

Please take a look here if you have not seen anything on Kappan Konnection.

Food Forward's Annual Harvest

Food Forward's Annual Harvest

Hey Kappans! Since I know most of you live in the valley, we wanted to cater this event a little bit towards you. This is an opportunity to pick fruit that will be donated to the homeless. We'll be harvesting thousands of pounds of fresh fruit from CSUN's Orange Grove to donate to local food banks. They have a goal to pick 10,000 pounds of fruit. Let's see if we can help them get to their goal! This is a great opportunity to give back to the homeless community!

Although this is a bit far from SMC I know a lot of you commute, but that doesn't mean people from the local area can't sign up!

There are only 10 spots available so first come first serve! (SIGNUPS ARE CLOSED NOW, WE HAVE 10 PEOPLE)

Make sure you dress according to the weather! Wear comfortable clothes that you're not afraid to get a little dirty!

See you there!

When: Sunday, April 3

Time: 8-10:00 a.m.

Location: CSUN Campus
